NIH Workshop: Design & Analysis of Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trials

The NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory is hosting a one-day workshop on the Design & Analysis of Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trials (ePCTs) on May 2, 2019, in the Lister Hill Auditorium on the NIH Campus.

The workshop will include a series of moderated discussions that focus on issues of measuring trial outcomes from available data sources, potential randomization strategies, specific ePCT design considerations, and unique challenges associated with ePCTs. Panel discussions will utilize case examples from the Collaboratory repertoire and beyond to illustrate how clinical investigators and biostatisticians work to address research questions posed by specific trials.

November 20, 2018: Upcoming NIH Funding Opportunity Announcements for Pragmatic Trials Address the Opioid Crisis

The NIH has announced an intent to publish new funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) for 5 or more embedded pragmatic clinical trials that address pain management and the opioid crisis. These projects will become part of the NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory as phased UG3/UH3 cooperative research. Both FOAs will be published in early December with applications due as early as February 2019.

The announcements are part of the NIH Heal (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) Initiative, which was created in April 2018 in an effort to speed scientific solutions for addressing the national opioid public health crisis.

April 16, 2018: Registration Now Open for Workshop on Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trials of Therapeutic A vs. B Interventions

Registration is now open for a one-day workshop sponsored by the NIH Common Fund and organized by NIH Collaboratory thought leaders. The workshop, to be held on May 16, will focus on expanding the understanding of a specific type of pragmatic trial, the A vs. B trial, which compares two or more distinct therapeutic medical interventions. Over the past 6 years, the NIH Collaboratory has launched NIH Collaboratory Trials that address questions of major public health importance in real-world settings with usual care as a control arm. Much has been learned about the design, conduct, and dissemination of pragmatic clinical trials through this work. As a next step, there is considerable excitement at the prospect of exploring pragmatic clinical trials for comparing medical interventions.

The workshop will include a series of moderated discussions of opportunities and approaches for partnering with healthcare systems, and other stakeholders, to conduct embedded A vs. B trials. Speakers will include representatives from NIH, FDA, OHRP, health systems, academia, and industry.

The workshop will take place from 8:00 AM – 4:15 PM ET on Wednesday, May 16. Participants can join in person at the Bethesda Marriott in Maryland or via webcast. Choose an option for attendance on the registration page.
