January 10, 2022: NIH Collaboratory Celebrates 10 Successful Years of Rethinking Clinical Trials® With a New Name and a Refreshed Living Textbook

The NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory is excited to launch into its tenth year with a new name: NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory. This new moniker reflects the NIH Collaboratory’s core mission and will carry the highly successful program into the future with a continued commitment to transforming clinical research.

The past decade has been a productive and prolific period for the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory. The program has supported 22 pragmatic trial NIH Collaboratory Trials spanning over 1,100 clinical sites in 45 states and covering a wide range of medical conditions, including kidney disease, fibromyalgia, sickle cell disease, and cardiovascular disease. The NIH Collaboratory continued to expand with a 2019 grant from the Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative℠, or NIH HEAL Initiative℠, to evaluate interventions designed to improve pain management and reduce reliance on opioids.

Core Working Groups with expertise in different facets of study design and conduct have worked closely with NIH Collaboratory Trial researchers to learn and document best practices for pragmatic clinical trials. These lessons are shared publicly on the continually growing online platform known as the Living Textbook of Pragmatic Clinical Trials, available at rethinkingclinicaltrials.org.

The program has also produced 224 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 380 presentations and abstracts at scientific conferences, and more than 400 public Grand Rounds webinars.

Setting the stage for the future, the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory has redesigned and enhanced the Living Textbook. Users will find a new look and streamlined navigation for accessing the program’s extensive collection of resources.

Bolstered by its decade of success, the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory is excited for continued opportunities to improve and implement pragmatic trials, include diverse groups of stakeholders, and generate knowledge that will benefit patients.
