April 21, 2026: NIH to Host Webinar on Modernizing Its Data and Safety Monitoring Policy

Screenshot of a flyer for an upcoming NIH webinarThe NIH Office of Science Policy will host a webinar to gather input on modernizing the NIH data and safety monitoring policy. The webinar, which is free and open to the public, will be held on May 13, 2026, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

To enhance efficiency and rigor, NIH intends to modernize the approach to data and safety monitoring and is committed to engaging the public in development of an updated policy. Since the 1998 NIH Data and Safety Monitoring Policy was published, study designs and monitoring practices have evolved, creating the need for more efficient and flexible practices to monitor data for all clinical research. NIH plans to modernize the Data and Safety Monitoring Policy starting with gathering input from the public, experts in the field, and the research community.

Clinical researchers, data management groups, biostatisticians, bioethicists, and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

The webinar is free and open to the public. However, registration is required to attend.
