SUMMARY:Scalable Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain: Results from the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) Trial
DESCRIPTION:Diana Burgess\, PhD \nRegister for the webinar \n  \nAgenda\nDr. Burgess will present results of the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) multisite\, pragmatic clinical trial\, which compares two scalable\, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for Veterans with chronic pain. Both LAMP interventions improved pain functioning (the primary outcome) and important biopsychosocial outcomes (e.g.\, pain intensity; anxiety\, depression\, and post-traumatic stress disorder; physical function; fatigue; sleep disturbance; participation in social roles/activities) over 12 months\, compared to usual care\, among Veterans with chronic pain and high levels of psychiatric comorbidity. These approaches to delivering MBIs could help accelerate the implementation of nonpharmacological pain treatment in the VA and other healthcare systems. \n  \nAbout the Spotlight on Pain Management Cyberseminar Series\nThe Pain Management Collaboratory (PMC) is delighted to share plans for sponsoring a special series of presentations as part of the VA Spotlight on Pain Management (SoPM) Cyberseminar series that will highlight the accomplishments and future initiatives of the Collaboratory. \nThe PMC is an important tri-government agency partnership involving the National Institutes of Health and Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs that supports a growing number of large-scale\, multisite\, pragmatic clinical trials (PCTs) of nonpharmacological approaches for the management of pain and common co-occurring conditions in military and Veteran health systems. Launched in 2017\, the originally supported eleven PCTs are nearing completion and are ready to present early findings\, lessons learned in the conduct of the trials\, and future directions and opportunities for implementation of important findings and products and for future research. \nFor more information check out the Cyberseminar Series Description page. \nPre-registration is required for participation\, but there is no cost. Continuing education credits are available for several disciplines for participants who are affiliated with VA. Check out the accreditation page.

SUMMARY:The Science of Partner Engagement in Research: Development and Validation of Evaluation Metrics
DESCRIPTION:Melody S. Goodman\, Ph.D.\nNew York University School of Global Public Health \nRegister for the webinar \nAbout the Webinar\nPartner engagement is a crucial part of participatory public health research\, yet the measurement of partner engagement in research is varied\, inconsistent\, and not methodologically sound. Partner-engaged research approaches and a mixed-methods (qualitative/quantitative) study design are used to validate a measure to assess the level of partner engagement in research—the research engagement survey tool (REST). To reduce partner burden\, a brief nine-item version of REST was developed. The resulting comprehensive version of REST was narrowed to 32 items corresponding to eight engagement principles. Psychometric results show acceptable internal consistency for the revised comprehensive measure’s eight engagement principles\, both on the quality and quantity scale (Cronbach’s Alpha from 0.79 to 0.92). Results also show low to moderate correlative validity with similar measures (Spearman correlation coefficient range: 0.19 to 0.69). Results show promise for a nine-item brief version of REST that is highly correlated with the comprehensive version of REST (quality and quantity: r=0.97\, p<0.01) and has similar overall and engagement principle-specific means. \nAbout Melody S. Goodman\nDr. Melody Goodman received her B.S. summa cum laude in applied mathematics-statistics and economics from Stony Brook University. She received her M.S. in biostatistics from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and her Ph.D. from the Department of Biostatistics at Harvard University with minors in theoretical statistics and the social determinants of health disparities. She is the Senior Executive Vice Dean\, Professor of Biostatistics\, and Director of the Center for Anti-Racism\, Social Justice & Public Health at the New York University School of Global Public Health. Her research interest is identifying the origins of health inequities and developing evidence-informed primary prevention strategies to reduce these health inequities. NIH\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Verizon Foundation\, Long Island Community Foundation\, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute\, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure have all funded her work. Dr. Goodman has over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and two books (2018 Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group)—Public Health Research Methods for Partnerships and Practice\, and Biostatistics for Clinical and Public Health Research. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2021) and the inaugural recipient of the Societal Impact Award from the Caucus for Women in Statistics (2021). \nDr. Goodman is a biostatistician and research methodologist. Her research efforts seek to develop a more rigorous understanding of the social risk factors that contribute to health inequities in urban areas\, intending to develop culturally competent\, region-specific solutions through collaborative activities with community members\, community-based organizations\, faith-based organizations\, and other community health stakeholders. The purpose of this work is not to continue to identify problems; rather\, her work focuses on developing solutions for improving health in minoritized and medically underserved communities. Dr. Goodman has two primary lines of research—an applied methods track that conducts applied biostatistical and survey research for community-based interventions and health inequities research with a strong focus on measurement\, and a community-engaged research track with a focus on enhancing the infrastructure for community-engaged research through academic-community collaborations\, as well as the implementation and evaluation of community-engaged research projects to reduce health inequities.

SUMMARY:Results from the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) Study: A Pragmatic Clinical Trial
DESCRIPTION:Diana Burgess\, a co–principal investigator of the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory’s RAMP trial\, will present the results of the precursor LAMP trial as part of the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Systems Research Cyberseminars series. \nThe Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) trial is a multisite pragmatic clinical trial that compared 2 approaches for delivering mindfulness-based interventions via telehealth for veterans with chronic pain. Both interventions improved pain functioning and important biopsychosocial outcomes over 12 months when compared with usual care among veterans with chronic pain and high levels of psychiatric comorbidity. These approaches to delivering mindfulness-based interventions could help accelerate the implementation of nonpharmacologic pain treatment in the VA healthcare system and other healthcare systems. \nResults from the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) Study: A Pragmatic Clinical Trial\nVA HSR Cyberseminars\nRegistration for the webinar is required.\nDate and time: Thursday\, June 20\, 2024; 12:00-1:00 pm ET \nBurgess is also a co–principal investigator of Reaching Rural Veterans: Applying Mind-Body Skills for Pain Using a Whole Health Telehealth Intervention (RAMP)\, an NIH Collaboratory Trial. RAMP will test the delivery of a modified version of the LAMP interventions for veterans in rural communities. Learn more about RAMP. \nBurgess is the director of the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Health Services Research in the Center for Care Delivery and Outcomes Research (CCDOR)\, the director of the VA’s QUERI Complementary and Integrative Health Evaluation Center (CIHEC)\, and a professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota.

SUMMARY:2024 Allan Donner Lecture: The Unit of Inference in Cluster Randomized Trials
DESCRIPTION:2024 Allan Donner Lecture: Dr. Fan Li\nDate: Friday\, April 5\nTime: 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm\nLocation: PHFM 3015 (Western Centre for Public Health and Family Medicine) or Zoom (link may be requested at EpiBio@uwo.ca)\nLink: https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/epibio/about_us/events/2024/2024_Allan_Donner_Lecture.html \nThe unit of inference in cluster randomized trials\nFan Li\n\nAssistant Professor \nDepartment of Biostatistics\nYale School of Public Health\,\nYale Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science \nShort Biography:\nFan Li is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Yale School of Public Health\, and Yale Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science. He obtained his PhD in Biostatistics from Duke University in 2019 and joined the Yale faculty since 2019. His research aims to develop methods for designing and analyzing cluster randomized trials\, causal inference methods for estimand-aligned analyses of randomized experiments and observational studies. Dr. Li’s methodology research has been funded by multiple awards from the United States National Institutes of Health and Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute as a principal investigator and a co-investigator. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles. He is Co-Editor in Chief of the journal\, Epidemiologic Methods\, and Associate Editor of several journals including Statistics in Medicine\, Clinical Trials\, and Implementation Science. \nAbstract: \nIn cluster randomized trials\, intact clusters of individuals rather than individuals themselves are randomly assigned to treatment conditions\, creating a two-level structure that complicates the design and analysis compared to individually randomized trials. While the need to address intracluster correlations has motivated a robust literature for designing and analyzing cluster randomized trials in the past two decades\, fewer efforts have integrated these developments in the context of treatment effect estimands. On page 13 of Donner and Klar (2000)\, it has already been suggested that “the target of inference in such studies (CRTs) could be at either the individual level or community level”\, but the philosophy around unit of inference seems to be lost in translation until recently. In this presentation\, we emphasize the difference between the unit of inference and the unit of analysis\, and use the potential outcomes notation to define estimands that represent the unit of inference\, regardless of the unit of analysis. In addition\, we explain how one can standardize the output from any familiar regression model to ensure estimand-aligned inference. A key take-away is that one does not need to forgo the conventional wisdom developed in the existing literature to obtain the right inferential target\, as long as the unit of inference is specified a priori\, and a robust standardization procedure is applied to process the regression model output. \nKeywords:\nCluster randomized trials; Stepped wedge designs; Causal inference; Estimands; Observational studies; Semiparametric methods. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Prevention in Focus Webinar Series: Is It More than PMS? Learn About PMDD
DESCRIPTION:Prevention in Focus Webinar Series: It More than PMS? Learn About PMDD\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarybeth Bohn\, International Association for Premenstrual Disorders\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandi MacDonald\, International Association for Premenstrual Disorders\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the webinar\n*A recording of this webinar will be available approximately two weeks after the session.\n\n\n\nAbout the Webinar\n\nMarybeth Bohn witnessed her 33-year-old daughter Christina’s suffering from a disorder that was frequently misdiagnosed\, and she often asked the inpatient psychiatrist\, “Where did my daughter go?” After nine months of her daughter being at home with her and her husband\, she finally figured out what was really happening when she learned about Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Right when hope was there and the sun was finally shining at the end of the tunnel\, she tragically lost her daughter to suicide due to PMDD. \nMs. Bohn will speak to the symptoms she and her husband witnessed as their daughter’s PMDD went undiagnosed and untreated for up to 15 years. The mask her daughter so effectively wore eventually slipped off\, and the symptoms took away the life Christina had worked so hard for. \nAlong with Ms. Bohn’s presentation\, Sandi MacDonald will discuss the diagnoses and symptoms of PMDD and Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME). She will also discuss the global impact of premenstrual disorders of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)\, PMDD\, and PME. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Marybeth Bohn\n\nMarybeth Bohn has been advocating for PMDD since she lost her daughter\, Christina Elizabeth Bohn\, to suicide in 2021 due to the disorder. The thought of others suffering as her daughter did for up to 15 years before receiving a correct diagnosis motivates Ms. Bohn to keep speaking out. She speaks publicly about PMDD to increase awareness and to reduce the time in getting an accurate diagnosis. She has spoken at the University of Missouri\, Postpartum Support International\, Missouri House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Reform\, Women’s Mental Health Conference at Yale\, and many other venues. In 2023\, she worked with the Missouri Legislature to pass a bill for having an annual PMDD Awareness Day on Oct. 2\, which is Christina’s birthday. Ms. Bohn serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors for the International Association For Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD) and has actively served as a PMDD Champion. After Christina’s death\, Ms. Bohn retired from the University of Missouri to focus on increasing awareness of PMDD. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sandi MacDonald\n\nSandi MacDonald is the co-founder and executive director of IAPMD\, an organization she co-founded due to her lived experience with PMDD. The IAPMD is a scientific evidence-based organization that has reached over a million people. Ms. MacDonald has over 25 years of experience working in the mental health and addiction sectors. She has worked the front lines in these sectors and has taught college-level programs. She has created and implemented programming for many different projects\, including peer support programs utilized by people impacted by PMDD and other premenstrual disorders across the globe. \nAs the executive director of IAPMD\, she has managed several projects for the organization and has participated in many research projects. She has been published as a co-author in journals such as the Journal of International Medical Research\, JAMA\, and the Journal of Medical Internet Research. She helped manage and author a year-long research project that resulted in the first-ever PMDD roundtable event. This event and project resulted in two first-ever patient-centered resources\, “A Guide to Conducting Rigorous\, Patient-Centered PMDD Research” and “A Strategic Plan to Advance Patient-Centered PMDD Research.” \n\nThis webinar will be captioned in real time. Individuals needing reasonable accommodations should email PreventionInFocus@nih.gov. Requests should be made at least 5 business days before the event.
