SUMMARY:Evaluating Synergies in Multilevel Interventions: Mental Health in Schools as an Exemplar
DESCRIPTION:Evaluating Synergies in Multilevel Interventions: Mental Health in Schools as an Exemplar\nMarta I. Mulawa\, Ph.D.\, M.H.S. \nAbout the Webinar\nMultilevel interventions are essential for addressing complex societal challenges\, such as systemic racism in educational institutions\, but they present unique evaluation challenges. These interventions inherently operate across multiple levels of influence\, such as schools and families\, with components that often interact. Traditional study designs typically assess these interventions as a package\, making it difficult to disentangle and understand the synergistic effects of the individual components. This talk presents a study design and corresponding analytic methods that enable a more nuanced understanding of the potential synergy occurring between intervention components of a hypothetical multilevel intervention promoting mental health in school systems. \nAbout Marta I. Mulawa\nDr. Marta I. Mulawa is an assistant professor at the Duke University School of Nursing\, with a secondary appointment at the Duke Global Health Institute. She is also a scholar at the Duke University Population Research Institute. Dr. Mulawa earned her M.H.S. in social and behavioral interventions from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\, followed by a Ph.D. in health behavior from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. With over 15 years of experience in NIH-funded social and behavioral intervention research\, Dr. Mulawa focuses on addressing health disparities in low-resource settings\, particularly related to HIV prevention and treatment. She has extensive experience working on teams conducting community-randomized and cluster-randomized trials. Currently\, her research focuses on developing and testing a digital health intervention to improve treatment adherence among youth living with HIV in South Africa.

SUMMARY:Implications of Informative Cluster Size for the Design and Analysis of Cluster Randomized Trials
DESCRIPTION:Methods: Mind the Gap Webinar Series \nImplications of Informative Cluster Size for the Design and Analysis of Cluster Randomized Trials \nPresented by Brennan Kahan\, PhD \nSeptember 27\, 2024\n11:00 am-12:00 noon ET \nRegister now \nAbout the Webinar\nCluster randomized trials involve randomizing groups of participants\, such as schools\, hospitals\, or villages\, between different interventions. Because participants belonging to the same cluster are often correlated\, statistical methods\, such as mixed-effects models or generalized estimating equations\, are required to account for this correlation during analysis. However\, it is being increasingly recognized that these methods may be biased when outcomes or treatment effects differ between larger and smaller clusters (i.e.\, informative cluster size). This talk focuses on the implications of informative cluster size for cluster randomized trials\, including choice of estimand\, choice of analysis method\, and ways to evaluate assumptions. \nAbout Brennan Kahan\nDr. Brennan Kahan is a Principal Research Fellow at the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit at University College London. Dr. Kahan’s research program is focused on developing methods to improve the design\, analysis\, and reporting of randomized trials. His major research interests include using estimands to improve the interpretability and validity of randomized trials; evaluating statistical methods for complex trial designs\, such as cluster\, non-inferiority\, factorial\, and rerandomization trials; and improving the reporting of randomized trials. His recent methods research includes the development of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials extension for factorial trials\, developing estimands and robust estimators for cluster randomized trials\, and evaluating and comparing estimation methods for different intercurrent event strategies. \n\nCan’t be there? A recording of this webinar will be available approximately 2 weeks after the session. You can view the full archive of previous Methods: Mind the Gap webinars on the Office of Disease Prevention website. \nThis event is open to the public and there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Please feel free to share this information widely. \nThis webinar will be captioned in real time. Individuals needing reasonable accommodations should email MindtheGap@nih.gov. Requests should be made at least 5 business days before the event.

SUMMARY:Scalable Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain: Results from the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) Trial
DESCRIPTION:Diana Burgess\, PhD \nRegister for the webinar \n  \nAgenda\nDr. Burgess will present results of the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) multisite\, pragmatic clinical trial\, which compares two scalable\, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for Veterans with chronic pain. Both LAMP interventions improved pain functioning (the primary outcome) and important biopsychosocial outcomes (e.g.\, pain intensity; anxiety\, depression\, and post-traumatic stress disorder; physical function; fatigue; sleep disturbance; participation in social roles/activities) over 12 months\, compared to usual care\, among Veterans with chronic pain and high levels of psychiatric comorbidity. These approaches to delivering MBIs could help accelerate the implementation of nonpharmacological pain treatment in the VA and other healthcare systems. \n  \nAbout the Spotlight on Pain Management Cyberseminar Series\nThe Pain Management Collaboratory (PMC) is delighted to share plans for sponsoring a special series of presentations as part of the VA Spotlight on Pain Management (SoPM) Cyberseminar series that will highlight the accomplishments and future initiatives of the Collaboratory. \nThe PMC is an important tri-government agency partnership involving the National Institutes of Health and Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs that supports a growing number of large-scale\, multisite\, pragmatic clinical trials (PCTs) of nonpharmacological approaches for the management of pain and common co-occurring conditions in military and Veteran health systems. Launched in 2017\, the originally supported eleven PCTs are nearing completion and are ready to present early findings\, lessons learned in the conduct of the trials\, and future directions and opportunities for implementation of important findings and products and for future research. \nFor more information check out the Cyberseminar Series Description page. \nPre-registration is required for participation\, but there is no cost. Continuing education credits are available for several disciplines for participants who are affiliated with VA. Check out the accreditation page.

SUMMARY:The Science of Partner Engagement in Research: Development and Validation of Evaluation Metrics
DESCRIPTION:Melody S. Goodman\, Ph.D.\nNew York University School of Global Public Health \nRegister for the webinar \nAbout the Webinar\nPartner engagement is a crucial part of participatory public health research\, yet the measurement of partner engagement in research is varied\, inconsistent\, and not methodologically sound. Partner-engaged research approaches and a mixed-methods (qualitative/quantitative) study design are used to validate a measure to assess the level of partner engagement in research—the research engagement survey tool (REST). To reduce partner burden\, a brief nine-item version of REST was developed. The resulting comprehensive version of REST was narrowed to 32 items corresponding to eight engagement principles. Psychometric results show acceptable internal consistency for the revised comprehensive measure’s eight engagement principles\, both on the quality and quantity scale (Cronbach’s Alpha from 0.79 to 0.92). Results also show low to moderate correlative validity with similar measures (Spearman correlation coefficient range: 0.19 to 0.69). Results show promise for a nine-item brief version of REST that is highly correlated with the comprehensive version of REST (quality and quantity: r=0.97\, p<0.01) and has similar overall and engagement principle-specific means. \nAbout Melody S. Goodman\nDr. Melody Goodman received her B.S. summa cum laude in applied mathematics-statistics and economics from Stony Brook University. She received her M.S. in biostatistics from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and her Ph.D. from the Department of Biostatistics at Harvard University with minors in theoretical statistics and the social determinants of health disparities. She is the Senior Executive Vice Dean\, Professor of Biostatistics\, and Director of the Center for Anti-Racism\, Social Justice & Public Health at the New York University School of Global Public Health. Her research interest is identifying the origins of health inequities and developing evidence-informed primary prevention strategies to reduce these health inequities. NIH\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Verizon Foundation\, Long Island Community Foundation\, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute\, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure have all funded her work. Dr. Goodman has over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and two books (2018 Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group)—Public Health Research Methods for Partnerships and Practice\, and Biostatistics for Clinical and Public Health Research. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2021) and the inaugural recipient of the Societal Impact Award from the Caucus for Women in Statistics (2021). \nDr. Goodman is a biostatistician and research methodologist. Her research efforts seek to develop a more rigorous understanding of the social risk factors that contribute to health inequities in urban areas\, intending to develop culturally competent\, region-specific solutions through collaborative activities with community members\, community-based organizations\, faith-based organizations\, and other community health stakeholders. The purpose of this work is not to continue to identify problems; rather\, her work focuses on developing solutions for improving health in minoritized and medically underserved communities. Dr. Goodman has two primary lines of research—an applied methods track that conducts applied biostatistical and survey research for community-based interventions and health inequities research with a strong focus on measurement\, and a community-engaged research track with a focus on enhancing the infrastructure for community-engaged research through academic-community collaborations\, as well as the implementation and evaluation of community-engaged research projects to reduce health inequities.
