Mulawa\, Ph.D.\, M.H.S. \nAbout the Webinar\nMultilevel interventions are essential for addressing complex societal challenges\, such as systemic racism in educational institutions\, but they present unique evaluation challenges. These interventions inherently operate across multiple levels of influence\, such as schools and families\, with components that often interact. Traditional study designs typically assess these interventions as a package\, making it difficult to disentangle and understand the synergistic effects of the individual components. This talk presents a study design and corresponding analytic methods that enable a more nuanced understanding of the potential synergy occurring between intervention components of a hypothetical multilevel intervention promoting mental health in school systems. \nAbout Marta I. Mulawa\nDr. Marta I. Mulawa is an assistant professor at the Duke University School of Nursing\, with a secondary appointment at the Duke Global Health Institute. She is also a scholar at the Duke University Population Research Institute. Dr. Mulawa earned her M.H.S. in social and behavioral interventions from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\, followed by a Ph.D. in health behavior from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. With over 15 years of experience in NIH-funded social and behavioral intervention research\, Dr. Mulawa focuses on addressing health disparities in low-resource settings\, particularly related to HIV prevention and treatment. She has extensive experience working on teams conducting community-randomized and cluster-randomized trials. Currently\, her research focuses on developing and testing a digital health intervention to improve treatment adherence among youth living with HIV in South Africa.

Because participants belonging to the same cluster are often correlated\, statistical methods\, such as mixed-effects models or generalized estimating equations\, are required to account for this correlation during analysis. However\, it is being increasingly recognized that these methods may be biased when outcomes or treatment effects differ between larger and smaller clusters (i.e.\, informative cluster size). This talk focuses on the implications of informative cluster size for cluster randomized trials\, including choice of estimand\, choice of analysis method\, and ways to evaluate assumptions. \nAbout Brennan Kahan\nDr. Brennan Kahan is a Principal Research Fellow at the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit at University College London. Dr. Kahan’s research program is focused on developing methods to improve the design\, analysis\, and reporting of randomized trials. His major research interests include using estimands to improve the interpretability and validity of randomized trials; evaluating statistical methods for complex trial designs\, such as cluster\, non-inferiority\, factorial\, and rerandomization trials; and improving the reporting of randomized trials. His recent methods research includes the development of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials extension for factorial trials\, developing estimands and robust estimators for cluster randomized trials\, and evaluating and comparing estimation methods for different intercurrent event strategies. \n\nCan’t be there? DESCRIPTION:IMPACT Grand Rounds \nSusan Huang\, MD\, MPH\n“Evidence for Reducing Infections\, Hospitalizations\, and Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens in Nursing Homes Through Universal Nasal Decolonization and Bathing with Chlorhexidine” \nSusan Huang\, MD\, MPH\, is a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Health Policy Research Institute at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine\, and the medical director of epidemiology and infection prevention at UC Irvine Health. Dr. Huang studies healthcare-associated infections with a focus on multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). She was a member of the NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory for Pragmatic Clinical Trials to prevent MRSA disease and other healthcare-associated infections. She also studies the regional prevention of MDROs in hospitals and nursing homes through epidemiologic studies as well as simulation models. SUMMARY:Scalable Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain: Results from the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) Trial
DESCRIPTION:Diana Burgess\, PhD \nRegister for the webinar \n  \nAgenda\nDr. Burgess will present results of the Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP) multisite\, pragmatic clinical trial\, which compares two scalable\, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for Veterans with chronic pain. Both LAMP interventions improved pain functioning (the primary outcome) and important biopsychosocial outcomes (e.g.\, pain intensity; anxiety\, depression\, and post-traumatic stress disorder; physical function; fatigue; sleep disturbance; participation in social roles/activities) over 12 months\, compared to usual care\, among Veterans with chronic pain and high levels of psychiatric comorbidity. These approaches to delivering MBIs could help accelerate the implementation of nonpharmacological pain treatment in the VA and other healthcare systems. \n  \nAbout the Spotlight on Pain Management Cyberseminar Series\nThe Pain Management Collaboratory (PMC) is delighted to share plans for sponsoring a special series of presentations as part of the VA Spotlight on Pain Management (SoPM) Cyberseminar series that will highlight the accomplishments and future initiatives of the Collaboratory. \nThe PMC is an important tri-government agency partnership involving the National Institutes of Health and Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs that supports a growing number of large-scale\, multisite\, pragmatic clinical trials (PCTs) of nonpharmacological approaches for the management of pain and common co-occurring conditions in military and Veteran health systems. Launched in 2017\, the originally supported eleven PCTs are nearing completion and are ready to present early findings\, lessons learned in the conduct of the trials\, and future directions and opportunities for implementation of important findings and products and for future research. \nFor more information check out the Cyberseminar Series Description page. \nPre-registration is required for participation\, but there is no cost. Continuing education credits are available for several disciplines for participants who are affiliated with VA. Check out the accreditation page.
