November 6, 2017: New Podcast Episode with Dr. Greg Simon is Live

The NIH Collaboratory is pleased to announce that the third episode of the Grand Rounds podcast is posted. In this episode, Dr. Greg Simon discusses the Suicide Prevention Outreach Trial (SPOT), and its implications for machine learning  in predicting suicide attempts and deaths. Dr. Simon describes how the use of computer algorithms to identify specific variables can help predict certain outcomes. In the SPOT trial, responses given on the PHQ-9 Depression Questionnaire were used to predict future suicide attempts, and therefore prevent them. Dr. Simon also discusses with moderator Lesley Curtis how machine learning may be expanded into broader clinical areas.
